The hijack lasted seven days and while the crew and passengers suffered, officers back home tried to find a solution to bring them home. According to the creators, the series revolves around the intriguing events of 24 December 1999, when Indian Airlines flight IC 814 en route from Kathmandu to New Delhi was hijacked, forcing it to divert to Kandahar. The hijacking, which lasted seven grueling days, caused untold suffering to both crew and passengers, while authorities at home worked tirelessly to secure their safe return.
Anubhav Sinha, known for his directorial achievements in films like “Mulk,” “Article 15,” and “Bheed,” expressed a deep responsibility to maintain authenticity during the making of the series.
Sinha commented, “When I began the research journey, it became clear that although many people remembered bits and pieces of the kidnapping, the broader story of the incident and its unfolding was still alive in few memories.” “I realized that this is a very complex story, and a lot of events unfolded during those seven days that are largely unknown to many people.”
Engaging in extensive discussions with officers, passengers and the pilot, Sinha revealed many untold stories that became the backbone of the series. “We strived to ensure factual accuracy while injecting dramatic potential into the narrative to keep the audience engaged. It was truly a fascinating journey,” he shared at the Next on Netflix event.
Sinha further revealed that despite initial assurances from Monica Shergill, vice president, content, Netflix India, that the series would be finished within eight months, production was extended over a period of two years.
